Beck Anxiety Inventory Scoring

The Beck anxiety inventory scoring system contains a scale which is used to measure the anxiety levels. This scale rates the answers of the inventory respondents according to their symptoms and the frequency of their occurrence.

Each symptom in the inventory has scores of between zero and 3, which the test taker uses to evaluate the level of anxiety that they experience. The inventory’s rating is as follows:

* A score of zero indicates that the respondent does not have this symptom at all.

* A score of one indicates the presence of the symptom, although the individual would describe it as mild and doesn’t affect him at all.

* A score of two indicates that the individual has the symptom and it is affecting him often. This means he experiences a moderate level of the anxiety symptom.

* A score of 3 means "I do have this symptom, and it affects me greatly and often." This score shows a severe level of the anxiety symptom.

Some of the symptoms rated by the inventory include fear of dying, difficulty in breathing, feeling nervous, dizziness, wobbliness in the legs and numbness, among other symptoms. They are aimed at distinguishing anxiety from depression symptoms.

Having read through all the symptoms as included in the inventory, the respondent will give it a rating. Then, he tallies the values that are indicated against each symptom. The total score is the anxiety level indicator. The score can be evaluated in the following manner:

* A total score of zero and 21 shows a low level of anxiety.

* A final score in the range of 22 and 35 reflects a moderate level of anxiety, and

* A total score of above 36 shows very high anxiety, in which case the respondent should seek help for their anxiety problems.

Every individual answers the inventory differently and will have a score that is unique to him/her self. The situations that one is in will have a direct correlation to the final score. The respondent has to examine his experience with each symptom in the past one week. This will allow accurate feedback with regards to the frequency and consistency of the symptoms.

A low anxiety level is cause for celebration as it indicates that the respondent is very happy with his life, although anxiety exists for a reason. It is healthy to live a life with mild form of anxieties. Conversely, too much anxiety can cause one to live in fear and can be debilitating on his physical condition. Those who have moderate levels of anxiety are usually able to suppress their anxieties, although they should be careful not let it get out of proportion.

Anxiety levels indicated by the Beck anxiety inventory scoring should help individuals learn where they rank in terms of their mental and emotional health, as well as to know if they require professional help to cope with the results. Those with moderate to high levels of anxiety can consult medical practitioners for methods of how to keep their anxiety under control and how to enjoy a stress free life.

Beat Depression Naturally by Boosting Your Happy Hormones

If you knew there was a shark swimming next to you in the ocean, what would you do? Most people will hightail it out of the water as fast as they can back to the shore. As a matter of fact no one in their right mind is going to let a shark devour them alive! On the same token we can let food be our medicine or we can let food devour us alive. Which would you prefer?

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in cold-water fish, such as tuna, mackerel and salmon, remarkably reduce symptoms of depression? If you or someone you know suffers from depression, it would be a great idea to eat more of these types of fish. Sardines, oysters and flax seeds, are also high on the list of foods with substantial amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. People who eat these foods three or more times a week show significant improvement in anxiety, insomnia, sadness, and suicidal thoughts.

Depression is an indication that certain hormones are out of kilter within the brain, specifically, beta-endorphins and serotonin. When our bodies lack adequate levels of seritonin and beta-endorphins, that balance out our brain chemistry, we may feel hopeless, sad, depressed, touchy to criticism, offended, crave sugar and alcohol and feel isolated and lonely – all signs of depression.

If you suddenly found out that the foods you have been eating are causing an imbalance in your brain chemistry, what would you do? Would you stop eating those foods? Refined foods are insufficient in vitamins and minerals and are like drugs to the brain, especially those people who suffer from depression, self esteem issues, and sugar imbalances. The good news is you can be in control of your health by boosting seritonin and beta-endorphin levels in your brain through a healthy eating lifestyle.

Whole grains, beans and legumes, vegetables and fruits should be incorporated into everyone’s diet if they want to live a healthy and long life. If it is processed and denatured, don’t eat it. It’s really that simple. Let’s take a look at some foods that can actually boost hormone levels in the brain.

Foods And Supplements That Boost Happy Hormones

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is found in spinach, turnip greens, garlic, cauliflower, mustard greens, celery, fish, such as tuna, salmon, cod and red snapper. Also chicken and turkey and lean beef tenderloin. Spinach should be eaten raw or either lightly steamed. Remember with any vegetable it is always best to keep it in its natural state as much as possible.

Magnesium

Magnesium levels tend to be lower in people who suffer from depressed moods. Magnesium supplements and foods with magnesium should be incorporated into the daily diet of those who suffer with sadness, anxiety and depressed thoughts. Foods high in magnesium are, halibut, tuna, bananas, dried figs, barley, buckwheat, oat bran, wheat flour, prune juice, almonds, Brazil nuts, black beans, lima beans, broccoli and cornmeal.

Whole Grains and Seeds

Whole grains that are especially good are amaranth, buckwheat, millet, brown rice, whole grain breads and cereals. Nuts and seeds are also great foods that will boost happiness levels. Walnuts are especially good for boosting serotonin. These are healthy, high-protein carbohydrates, which are critical for increasing serotonin.

Fermented Foods

Fermented foods and liquids greatly assist in digestion and assimilation of all the important nutrients you need for serotonin. Additionally, they boost the nutrients in your food by at least a hundred fold. Fermented foods manufacture essential B vitamins that help with boosting your mood. Sauerkraut is an excellent source of fermented food. In addition, an excellent fermented drink is Dong Quai, which is great for energy and mood and it decreases cravings for sugar!

Herbs

The herbal supplements St Johns Wart and Gingko Biloba are excellent natural sources for treating depression and giving the body a boost of energy at the same time. We should never fail to recognize the importance of herbal supplementation in healing certain health conditions with. Herbs work and should be used in conjunction with other helpful natural treatments.

Red Raspberry Tea

Red raspberry tea is especially good for depression and bouts of the blues. This all natural tea balances out the hormones, giving a soothing and calming affect on the body and mind. Herbal teas are good for you and should be a regular part of your diet.

Exercise

Exercise boosts serotonin level in the brain. Even gentle exercise like walking can boost your immunity and mood. Walking is one of the best activities that virtually anyone can partake in. Walk for life.

Foods That Trigger Depression

Refined sugar

If you suffer from low moods, you may have intense cravings for sugar. This is your body’s way of trying to increase serotonin because eating sugar produces insulin, which gives you a temporary feeling of elation. But too much sugar overtime can eventually cause addiction to sugar, insulin resistance, hypoglycemia and alcoholism.

Alcohol

If you are trying to overcome depression you should not drink alcohol or take medications that contain alcohol. Alcohol works against the body, causing havoc within our emotions, which only exacerbate symptoms of depression.

Antidepressants

Antidepressants and pain medications are intended to mask the symptoms of depression and throw the bodies hormone system out of whack. The most important thing you can do for your health is to get to the origin of why you are depressed in the first place, so you can stop taking damaging medications. If you want to heal depression the natural way, the first place to start is in your daily diet.

Are you going to let food devour you or will you let food make you well. Having good health in body, mind, and soul is a lifestyle choice. Don’t let depression, mood swings, anxiety, or low self worth keep you from enjoying life to its fullest. You can overcome depression and boost your happy hormones with food.

Global rating of the product: 4.5 stars

How many people in this world buy hip hop Cds? Probably millions.
How many people wear urban clothes and attend to hip hop parties? Probably millions too.

How many people-besides those who can relate to the ghetto experience- are aware of troubleshooting in the hood? Very few I guess.

DMX’s fourth CD draws a realistic and dark picture of his hood. Not only does the artist make the listener step into a pessimistic atmosphere, he also raises some deep philosophical questions about the meaning of life.

Sometimes introduces DMX’ speech. In times of desperation and helplessness, you sit alone in the dark, facing adversity while your mind is fulfilled with anxiousness. Big clouds are hanging over you, letting you guess that the prelude to the human drama you are going through has just begun. The wind has just raised a little bit, but you can feel the upcoming storm and the pouring rain hanging over your head like a huge menace.

Sirens coming from the fed’s cars, gun shots, pounding beats, electric guitar sounds, violins, DMX’s gritty voice will suggest the running atmosphere of School Streets. So many kids in the hood have lost their lives. Everybody’s running, trying to escape from the police.

Who We Be is a rhythmic track based on electric guitar and keyboard sounds that describes the harshness of the streets with an amazing sense of reality: the constant fights with the cops, jail, the murders, the stabbings, the coffins, drug deals, the frustration and the rage. This is the hood. People who have experienced the harshness of the hood jungle can relate to this well handled song. DMX’ vocals are raw on purpose.
The short hammering guitar sounds represent the human drama a man in the hood goes through.

Trina Moe is a melodic song built on harp, maracas and trumpet sounds.

It is dark and the hell is hot. The swinging track exposes the constant run and the unsafe atmosphere.

Bloodline Anthem has some strong rock ‘n roll accents. Based on electric guitar sounds, female vocals, strong drum beats and violins in the background, the song is enhanced with DMX’ grimy and offensive voice. Feel the rage, the passion and the wide range of emotions that are going through DMX’ mind.

Soft guitar notes contrast with DMX’ raspy voice. The hammering drum beats and the monotony of the vocals will make the listener feel the every day struggle. No compromises: snakes get totally exposed in Damien III. Piano sounds at the end of the song enhance feelings of mistrust and anger.

When I’m Nothing is built on soft funky instrumentals and female vocals. The song featuring Stephanie Mills is rhythmic, entertaining and very melodic. Love is in the air. Enjoy the joy and happiness all around.

I Miss You is the wonderful song DMX dedicated to his grandmother. Constructed on deep female vocals, soft instrumental, the track is heartbreaking. It enlightens DMX’ everlasting love for his grandma. He recalls childhood times, remembers the good and the bad. The word that comes up into his mouth is « Thank You », because he knows that the old lady educated him the right way. The refrain from the poignant song is like the voice of the grandma, watching her grandson from Heaven and telling him that everything is gonna be all right. Believe it: our beloved ones are still watching over us.

« Number 11 » brings you back to the permanent struggle in the hood jungle. Knife alike violin sounds, fast running car sounds in the background are here to make you feel the overheated atmosphere. Follow the talented emcee in his fast walk.

I’ma Bang is built on dark bassline, dynamic electric guitar sounds and raw drum beats. DMX’s determination, his struggle, his incredible dynamism come to shine to the fullest. DMX will teach you the harshness of the fight. The track is pure dynamite.

Rapid chord sounds totally match with Mashonda and DMX’s voices. DMX fully masters rhythm, flow and lyrics. DMX keeps it real and fakes’ masks will be dropped in no time. No place for posers of any kind: right is right and wrong is wrong.

The Prayer IV is a strong prayer towards God. DMX looks at himself in the mirror, envisions his mistakes and asks God to stand for him.

Listen to the words of the man of faith who wants to dedicate his work to God.

A Minute For Your Son is an intense praise towards God. Open your ears and let DMX’ words penetrate your heart. DMX is certainly a strong role model for the believers. Don’t judge the man by his actions, rather look up at the way he trusts the Creator and learn from him.

DMX’ The Great Depression CD is a great piece of work. It offers the listeners a realistic perspective about life in the hood. It exposes the harshness, but it also shows strong signs of hope. Interdependent darkness and full light shades follow each other and teach us the paradox of existence.

The Great Depression definitely belongs to your hip hop library.

Title: Out of the Dust
Author: Karen Hesse
Reading age: 8 to 12

Out of the Dust is a riveting, evocative and mournful story of the Great Depression. Karen Hesse’s YA novel narrows the focus of the catastrophic Dust Bowl in the Southwest during the 1930’s to a single family living in Oklahoma. Through a series of free verse poems the forlorn voice of fourteen-year-old Billie Jo Kelby takes the reader through grim domestic realities and constant dust storms. However Billie Jo still has dreams of a future.

On the Road with Arley

"Here’s the way I figure it.
My place in the world is at the piano.
I’m earning a little money playing,
thanks to Arley Wanderdale.
……And every little crowd
is grateful to hear a rag or two played
on the piano
by a long-legged, red-haired girl,
even when the piano has a few keys soured by dust.

The starkness of Billie Jo’s circumstances immerses the reader deep into a first hand account of the Depression. On each page you will find yourself completely absorbed in the daily struggle for survival. Hesse’s voice espouses realism on every page and you can almost taste the grit and dust in your own teeth.

"Rules of Dining",

We shake out our napkins,
spread them on our laps,
and flip over our glasses and plates,
exposing neat circles,
round comments
on what life would be without dust.

This book does not provide background or history on any of the characters or events like straight prose might require. Therefore some middle grade children may have trouble understanding the depth and meaning of some of the verses. However, Hesse’s words are so powerful that you can see and feel the history and in some cases desperation in words like;

"As summer wheat came ripe,
so did I,
born on the kitchen floor. Ma crouched,
barefoot, bare bottomed
over the swept boards
because that is where daddy said it’d be best."

You meet families migrating to California only to find things are just as bad there. Not enough jobs. The amount of dust that Billie Jo and her family endure on a daily basis is overwhelming and mind boggling. Dust clogs the tractor motor, ruins the wheat crop, creeps into the bed sheets and ruins Billie Jo’s precious piano. It rings true that Billie Joe and her family eats sleeps and drinks dust.

Blankets of Black

"We watched as the storm swallowed the light.
The sky turned from blue
to black,
night descended in an instant
and the dust was on us.

Each poem of Hesse’s is a work of art giving the people of Billie Jo’s small Okalahoma town depth and purpose.

Depressions engender great social angst. The suffering and grit of the first Great Depression is well documented, both in history books and in the oral tradition of many American families…

There is some analogy to the Great Depression in the present situation. Between 1918 and 1939, American agriculture was in permanent decline…

Children’s Book Review – Rose’s Journal, The Story of a Girl in …

This book lets kids travel back in time to the 1930s with a young girl named Rose who lives on a farm in Kansas during the Great Depression. The pink pages of Rose’s journal take readers on a journey to see for themselves just what life was like from month to month on the farm. It also includes information about what was happening across the nation back then. Historical black and white photographs make this journal seem more real and help to give kids a glimpse of just how bleak life was for a girl like Rose.

Rose’s Journal is an enjoyable way for young readers to learn about one of the most fascinating periods in American history – when Amelia Earhart made her solo flight from Hawaii to California, yet times were so tough for most Americans that they lived by this motto for making do with what little they had: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

The journal is printed on lines which look like notebook paper, as if each page were handwritten by Rose. It includes drawings of important things in Rose’s life, like her puppy, the radio (which was a big part of everyone’s life back then), and her family, etc. Kids and adults alike will find this to be an entertaining read that leaves them with a good idea of just difficult the Great Depression, dust storms, and droughts must have been for someone like young Rose.

The Great Depression Ahead by Harry S Dent, Jr

When I was in my early 20s, I looked back and thought about how lucky I was because I’d been just the right age to see many important cultural changes.

I was just the right age to read comics a year after Stan Lee re-created Marvel Comics, inventing such still-popular characters as The Fantastic Four, Spiderman, The Hulk and The X-Men.

I was just the right age a little later to appreciate when Ballantine and Ace reprinted Edgar Rice Burroughs (author of the Tarzan books and even more exciting fantastic adventure stories).

I was a little too young to be listening to the radio when The Beatles first sang on The Ed Sullivan Show, but I began by late 1964, and so grew up with the best AM radio music in history, followed by FM, followed by the more sophisticated rock sound of the 1970s.

A few years later I was just the right age to appreciate when Lancer reprinted the Conan stories and other works by Robert E. Howard.

I was a tad young when I heard about The Lord of the Rings after it first became a fad on college, but I was in high school when Ballantine published it in paperback and I re-read it.

And through my high school years I took for granted reading the two best book series of all time — the Ace Books Science Fiction Specials edited by Terry Carr and Ballantine Books Adult Fantasy ostensibly edited by Lin Carter.

Yet, looking back, I didn’t connect this remarkable luck with how my elementary school teachers complained about our large class sizes (usually around 30 kids) or with how it just seemed natural that my high school class was the largest in the school’s history, but next year my sister’s class was even larger.

What’s all that have to do with a book about the coming depression?

Simple. I’m a baby boomer. The country’s entertainment industries didn’t give me just what I wanted at the age I needed it either by coincidence or because they loved me personally. It was because they knew there was a huge market of boys and girls the same age as I.

And now we’re starting to reach retirement age.

We’ll be vacating many jobs. We’ll stop buying stocks and bonds out of our paychecks. We’ll stop paying Social Security taxes out of our paychecks. We’ll start paying down debt instead of spending money on our latest toys. We’ll start selling off stocks and bonds to finance our cruises, golf games and heart surgeries.

According to Mr. Dent, the U.S. had high inflation and unemployment in the 1970s because that’s when so many baby boomers started looking for work and spending money to start new families.

As we advanced in our careers, we created the boom that began in 1982. The entrepreneurs among us launched the innovative companies that have reshaped the world and its economies.

Dent goes into a lot more detail about what’s causing this. He essentially says that we’ve just gone through a boom and bust in stocks and real estate — nobody can dispute that. He says the commodities boom will bust soon. That remains to be seen.

He also talks a lot about other cycles that, frankly, I am not at all sure exist.

Yet I know that the demographic, lifestyle cycle does exist.

If you wish, you can argue with Dent. He’s certainly been wrong about a lot of details. We certainly didn’t see the tremendous stock market bubble he predicted for the past few years.

I’m sure that many of his specific predictions about the next ten to thirteen years (demographics will come to our rescue about 2023) will be wrong.

But I do believe that anybody who discounts the adverse effect the aging of us baby boomers is going to have on the U.S. and world’s economy is foolish.

Just look at Japan. Their baby boomer generation started retiring in 1990. Japan’s economy hasn’t recovered yet.

Much of this book is fascinating speculation about the world’s future. (Hint: China will grow old before it grows rich. The most likely long-term contender to dominate Asia is India.)

The Beck Depression Scale – What You Need to Know

The Beck depression scale is a common diagnostic tool for mental health professionals. They use the scale or inventory to help diagnose individuals and it can be used in a wide variety of settings. For individuals who question whether they are depressed or not, the Beck Depression Inventory can help them learn more.

The scale can be used with anyone as long as they have at least fifth or sixth grade reading level skills. Generally, those who are 13 or older will be able to take the inventory. The scale has been updated several time since its inception in the 1960s.

The BDI, as the scale is also known, features a 21 item self report scale. The questions measure different manifestations of depression, including aspects like social isolation, sadness, pessimism, guilt, and self accusation among other symptoms. The test takes about ten minutes to complete for most people and can give an indication about the presence and severity of a person’s illness.

The scores on the inventory can tell a mental health professional about an individual’s state of mind and whether the individual is suffering from depression. It’s important to remember that the test isn’t fool proof and that an individual could manipulate the scores if they didn’t answer the questions honestly.

The overall reliability of the scale is a factor to keep in mind: taking the inventory at a different time can produce different results if the symptoms have increased in severity or gotten better since the first test. Experts also caution that the environment that the individual takes the test in can also influence results. Social expectations may influence certain answers if others are present.

The Beck Inventory does not produce a diagnosis, but it can be a tool in understanding whether the illness is present and how severe it is. Individuals should talk to their mental health professionals about the results and what those results might mean for diagnosis and treatment options.

If you are interested in learning more about the Beck Depression Scale, talk to a mental health professional about the inventory and what you can expect when you answer the questions. You should also talk to the professional about any symptoms that you may be having and what treatments may be available to help you.

Why Disability Insurance Is So Important

When you have a disability of any type, your time, energy, and emotions are all heightened as you begin the journey to learn all you can so that you can regain the best quality of life that you can, given your particular circumstances. And, if you are married, and/or if you have children, trying to communicate with them what is going on with you, as well as to your doctors, becomes a difficult chore also.

With all of this chaos in your life, the absolute last thing that you need to worry about is money! What if I can’t work any longer? How will the bills be paid?

Perhaps you are saying that you do not need any disability insurance. Consider the following.

Disability Statistics[1]

The odds of a person having at least one long term disability (LTD) that lasts three months or longer before that person reaches age 65.

DISABLED: (1999) According to the Disability Management Sourcebook, the number of folks between 17 and 44 with severe disabilities has increased 400 percent over the past 25 years. One in seven people will become disabled for five years or more before they reach 65.

ODDS, STATISTICS AND DISABILITIES: (1999) The chances of using your homeowners insurance are about 1 in 88. The odds of using your auto insurance at about 1 in 47. The chances of using your LTC insurance is about 2 in 5. One out of two women and one out of three men will spend some time in a nursing home. (Journal of the American Society of CLU, 1996) More than 12 million older Americans will require some form of long term care by 2020. (Health Insurance Association of America). 72% of residents in a nursing home are women 90% of nursing home residents are over the age of 65. 22% of the disabled population is under age 65. (Puget Sound Life Underwriters Journal 1996). Functionally disabled people between the ages of 18 and 64 represent 40% of Americans needing long term care services. (Life Insurance Selling 1995)

The likelihood of needing LTC (obviously) increases with age. In 1991, 29.2% if those age 45- 64 had a disability; 44.6% between 65 and 74 had a disability; 63.7% between the ages of 75 to 84. 15.3% and 41.5% respectively had a severe disability. (Employee Benefit Research Institute, 1995) 80% of disabled persons are cared for at home or in adult day care centers. 72% of caregivers are family or friends. (Puget Sound Underwriters Journal). The cost of home care can run from $4.25 to over $200 daily depending on the level of skill needed (SF Chronicle, 1995). Caring for each Alzheimers patient will cost more than $213,000- on top of other medical expenses- over the remaining five years of their lives. (American Journal of Public Health, 1994). Over 99% of nursing home care is either custodial or intermediate care, not skilled care, and is not covered by Medicare or Medicare supplements (Journal of the American Society of CLU’s, 1996).

Reasons People Take STD and LTD

Leading the list of Top 5 causes of short-term disability (STD) workplace absence for 2001 was pregnancy (normal), followed by complications from pregnancy, injuries (excluding back), back conditions and digestive/intestinal conditions. The causes of claims and the percentage received for each cause were as follows:

LTD – 13 percent – Cancer, 12 percent – Complications from Pregnancy, 11 percent – Back, 9 percent – Cardiovascular, 5 percent – Depression
(2003) every year 12% of the adult U.S. population suffers a long-term disability. One out of every seven workers will suffer a five-year or longer period of disability before age 65, and if you’re 35 now, your chances of experiencing a three-month or longer disability before you reach age 65 are 50%. If you’re 45, the figure is 44%

STD – 20 percent – Pregnancy (Normal), 9 percent – Pregnancy (Complications), 9 percent – Injuries (Excluding Back), 8 percent – Back, 8 percent – Digestive/Intestinal

The primary sources of disability insurance are STD and LTD. It is important to see if your company offers these insurances. If they do, make sure that you are covered. If they don’t, you can get personal STD and LTD. By visiting the following website, you can get more information about disability insurances.

How Much Disability Insurance is "Enough"?

Research shows the following about employer-offered STD (short term disability) and LTD (long term disability).

Disability Insurance: ( 2003) In small private firms, fewer than one-quarter of workers have short-term disability coverage (22%), and just 13 percent have long-term disability income insurance, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Half of workers at large employers (100 or more employees) have short-term disability income insurance (47%), and more than one-third have long-term disability coverage (40%).

Disability coverage (American Council of Insurers 2004) 82% of employees are lacking in adequate coverage.

The Society of Actuaries says that only 2.5% of employees have individual disability coverage (i.e., paid for by the employee and not the company).

If you have already read the other blogs about Disability insurance, you know how important it is to know about what types of insurance you have, and how much each insurance will pay out, if and when you need it.

Now, you know how much your STD and LTD will pay out each month. The question is, how much SHOULD YOU HAVE?

There are some simple ways to determine just how much is "enough", and it varies for each family.

1) Sick leave – maintain at minimum 5 days, and, at best, 10 days. In this way, you will be able to meet a usual time gap before your STD kicks in.

2) STD – most STD policies cover up to 26 weeks. To make sure that you have "enough" STD TIME coverage, the weeks should cover your LTD’s elimination period.

3) LTD – timewise, you will want your LTD plan to cover you until your retirement age. (Note, not all retirement ages are at 65. The retirement ages are increasing; make sure that you know your specific retirement age.)

Now, let’s talk about money. To calculate how much money is needed by you and your family, consider the following.

For each month, note the following.

1) OUTGO Your "must pay" expenses (including, but not limited to the following: house payment; utilities; car and gasoline; medical expenses; any child care; any loans, credit cards, etc.)

2) INCOME ON DISABILITY Add together any income other than yours (i.e., spouse’s income) plus whatever you will receive on a monthly basis from your company-paid STD and/or LTD. Add to this amount whatever savings you have, and how long this would last.

The gap between income on disability and outgo would be the amount of income that you might want to offset with a private LTD policy.

WHY THE NEED FOR DISABILITY INSURANCE BENEFITS?
What are the odds?: (2005) in the next hour 194 people will be injured in car accidents, 57 homes will catch fire, 230 people will die, and 1,027 will become disabled.

Here are the latest disability trends that concern you.

* Today, we live harder, work harder and play harder than ever before. As a consequence, there has been a dramatic increase in disabling injuries and illnesses.

* In the past 25 years, the number of severely disabled people ages 17 to 44 has increased 400 percent. While the number of people with protection has also increased, most Americans still have a disability income protection gap.

* This is alarming when you consider in a year’s time, chances are only one in 1,200 of you will need your fire insurancegenerally considered a necessity for homeownersbut one in eight (8) of you will be sick, injured or killed.

* The risk of becoming disabled will continue to increase.

Aging is a main factor.

* Because of advanced trauma and cancer care, more people today survive illnesses and injuries that were deadly 20 years ago. In 1930, the average U.S. life expectancy was 61; today, it is 76; and by the year 2050, it will be 82. Today, there are 3.6 million Americans over age 65; by 2040, there will be 13.8 million.

* With Americans now living longer, age has and will continue to have a profound impact on disabilities. According to the National Association of Health Underwriters, there are 3.74 disabilities per 1,000 people ages 45 to 49. This increases nearly five times more with age, to 15.18 disabilities per 1,000 people ages 60 to 64.

* In addition, the traditional retirement age is moving up, and more people are likely to work part-time after retirement, thus increasing the risk of a disability later in their life.

Changing workforce

* More than 10.5 million people are starting their own businesses, consulting or working at home, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And more women than ever are now working; many families today rely on two incomes. In the early 1900s, there were only 500,000 married women in the labor force. They represented just 4.5 percent of all married women. Today, there are about 39 million married women working outside the home (representing 60 percent of all married women), and 17 million of them have children under age six.

* With more women working and families relying on two incomes, the need for disability protection has become greater, especially since women are twice as likely to suffer a disabling illness than men. And with more people working out of their homes and earning substantial incomes, the need for more flexible, individualized protection is on the rise.

Increase in workplace disabilities

* Over the years, the causes of disabilities have changed in the workplace.

* Today, disabilities due to psychiatric conditions, severe back pains, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, muscle/tissue disorders and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are increasing dramatically. Among the most common long-term disabilities (those lasting longer than three years) are circulatory and heart conditions, back disorders, psychiatric conditions, general sickness and subjective pain.

* Common short-term disabilities (those lasting less than three years) include normal pregnancies as well as pregnancies with complications, injuries, muscular or skeletal problems, and psychiatric or substance abuse problems.

Start Your Home Based Business Now – Learn From the Past

Starting a home business in the time of recession? Is this the smart thing to do, seeing that so many businesses going under and filing bankruptcies at an alarming rate? If your answer to these questions are yes, then listen up!

During the time of recessions and we have had our share, well over ten that I can remember since the great depression, long before my time!

Since the age of the Internet and the merge of the technology of software, we have experienced a whole new concept of doing business. Never before has there been a time, that the average person can have the opportunity to start a home based business or take their existing business and expand it to a worldwide market through the technology of the Internet.

Long before the age of the Internet ever come along, there were entrepreneurs embarking on the revolution of network marketing.

One of the pioneers of the this new revolutionary ways of doing business was J.R. Watkins founded the J.R. Watkins Medical Company in 1868. J.R. Watkins was one of the first companies that had associates marketing directly to the consumers.

In the year of 1931, the vice president of sales for the Fuller Brush company, Frank Stanly Beveridge and Catherine L. O’Brien founded Stanly Home Products.

Not being detoured by the economic hardship of the great depression and the enormous amount of unemployment that the average American was experiencing, they hatched a plan that would let the people have the opportunity to start their very own business, all with a minimal start up cost.

Stanly Home Products was for the everyday household, cleaners, mops, brushes. To increase their sales volume, the Stanly dealers started to give demonstration to social clubs and different organizations, rather than one on one sales. Finally came the "party plan", the home owner would invite several of their friends and family and hence the "party plan" was born.

Many of the great leaders received their training as dealers of Stanly Home Products going on to head up their own company, Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics; Brownie Wise of Tupperware; Mary Crowley of founder of Home Interiors, all spurred on by the Fuller Brush Company.

Looking back at the great depression and the entrepreneurial spirit that arose out of need, one can only have hope, when hard times came over the majority of Americans, a new way of life emerged from desperate times.

Today we find many are experiencing tough times, perhaps not as severe as the great depression but, nevertheless, when you have no job, can’t pay the mortgage payment, not able to feed the family and no hope of employment in the near future, this is a great depression for these individuals!

There’s no better time than now to start a home base business. There’s a worldwide market waiting to be tapped. Twelve to fifteen thousand new business are started every day on the Internet and this number is rising on a daily bases, all because of the economic recession that engulfs the world today.

People can change their situation in life and rise above the economic depression they find themselves in, just look back at the great depression, when the entrepreneurial spirit was born out of need.

Depression is a condition that is felt by everyone. Some people are lucky enough that it only mildly affects them and usually doesn’t last for very long. Others are not so lucky. For these people if depression is not treated it can completely ruin their life. It destroys careers, tears families apart and puts a strain on friendships. If you suffer from depression for long periods of time, then it would be advised that you seek help before it gets out of control. However, seeking help does not mean that you have to take medication for your depression. There are other options available. Here are some tips for a medication depression alternative if you would rather stay away from anti-depression.

Sometimes it may be hard to know exactly why you are depressed. For instance, you may think that you live a rather care-free life when really you are under a lot of stress or pressure. This could be either from your home life or your career. Therefore, one of the medication depression alternative tips that could be beneficial for you would be talking to a therapist. Depression can be caused by many things, even something that happened in your childhood. Any major traumatic event can cause feelings of depression. It is even possible for these feelings to be so suppressed that you get upset and stressed out over small insignificant things that normally wouldn’t matter. Talking can help you deal with these problems.

Other medication depression alternative tips include beginning an exercise program. You can start off small and then move up as you progress. The most important factor is that you do not start out with goals that are impossible to meet. This will only set you up to become more depressed when you find that you cannot meet your goals. If you begin by starting out small and work up to higher expectations, then exercise can help you to feel better about yourself which can help to eliminate some depression. If you just cannot seem to get started on an exercise program, then try walking or engaging in some other type of activity.

Other medication depression alternative ideas include finding a method of relaxation and diet. Many people don’t realize that what you eat also has an effect on how you feel. Overeating can make you feel sluggish and can make you feel depressed to a degree, especially if you are already overweight. Therefore, controlling your diet can also help with depression. Finding a way to relax can make a big difference as well. This could be anything from getting a hobby to practicing yoga. Whatever you enjoy doing that makes you feel happy and relaxed can improve the symptoms of depression.
