ECT Therapies – What Are They?
These days, we know more about depression than ever before. We have more ways to treat depression as well as medications to help people live better with their illness and function as normal as possible. Depression is a horrible disease and unfortunately can take a long time before a progress is seen. Most of the therapies and drugs take a lot of time to work effectively. With all the therapies that are available, there is still a small percentage of people who need more than a conventional therapy. For those who do not seem to get any results, there are ECT therapies.
Providing ECT therapy is not a decision to be taken lightly. This is normally provided when all other options have failed. This therapy is used only for people who are suffering the most severe forms of depression. People with thoughts of suicide, and those who are completely incapacitated by their depression, are the people who should be considered for ECT therapy.
When a patient receives ECT treatment, electrical impulses are sent to his brain. So this causes a small seizure. The patient is sedated while this happens and wakes up without remembering anything about what took place. Sometimes the patient wakes up confused and feeling sick. However, memory loss is usually temporary.
ECT is repeated between six and twelve times with intervals separated by a few weeks. Many patients feel an improvement after a few sessions. It’s believed that electrical impulses change the brain pattern of. ECT has worked on many people and in most cases the effects are temporary.
ECT therapy is given only when is absolutely necessary. When you need depression symptoms to get eliminated immediately, then ECT is a possibility.
Depression is a disease that destroys individuals, families and relationships. The disease leaves people a feeling of sadness and failure and in some cases makes them completely useless. Today, we have many ways to treat depression. Talking therapies, natural therapies and medications are among the most common. However, when all these options fail, then ECT therapy is considered. This therapy is quite controversial. It takes an element of danger but has worked for many people who have suffered from severe depression. ECT can have side effects but can also help those who have not obtained any results with other therapies.
