Depression Statistics Amongst Teenagers

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems that hit teenagers in the United States. In fact, according to a study done by mental health institutions, about 20% of teenagers are likely to suffer from bouts of anxiety and depression before they can even reach adulthood. The alarming depression statistics among teenagers reflect how this illness has become a common problem not only among adults but among teens as well. It also goes to show that depression can strike people of all ages.

Here are some other depressing statistics that will tell you how depression is becoming a serious health issue and how much immediate attention and solution it needs.

While a small percentage of teens suffer from seasonal depression, 5% suffer from major depression. Of this 5%, some develop other disorders, including antisocial behaviors, drug or alcohol addiction and anxiety.

Half of the teenagers with depression inherited the illness from their parents.

Around 30% of teenagers suffering from depression tend to develop substance abuse.

Teens with depression that are left untreated have higher suicidal tendencies, making the condition the third leading cause of death in teens.

About 15% of teenagers suffering from depression tend to develop a more serious mental health problem called bipolar disorder.

What will probably give a lot of people much relief is the fact that 80% of teenagers can easily get over depression if they seek help from health experts and therapists, and undergo a series of treatments and medications.

But before seeking professional help, determining the cause of depression is the very first step that must be done. Aside from genes, other factors such as social rejection, family problems, and failing grades also lead to bouts of anxieties, which eventually results in depression. Also, biological behaviors, such as drastic changes in sleep patterns and appetite; and cognitive factors, such as a negative and pessimistic mindset, all significantly contribute to depression. Once the causes are realized, it’d be easier to choose the proper treatment for the depression.

Therapies and medications are two of the usual treatments for depression. There are a number of therapies that teenagers can undergo; the most common of which are psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy. There are also antidepressant medications that are often prescribed along with these therapy sessions. SSRI’s are proven to be more effective among teens than tricyclic antidepressant medications. The effects, however, are not evident until after a few weeks but will surely make teen sufferers feel less tense minutes after taking the medication. Apart from therapies and medications, there are also self-help books that teens can use. This method, however, may come a bit more challenging and may require huge motivations from teen sufferers.

During the whole process of recovering from depression, utmost support and help from parents and loved ones are what teen sufferers need. There’s no better way to encourage and motivate them to start feeling good about themselves again than making them feel they are supported, loved and cared for.

To sum everything up, the alarming depression statistics among teens can very well improve in the coming years if this health issue is given enough attention and if teen sufferers receive immediate and proper treatments.

More Than Baby Blues – Treating Postpartum Depression

Most people will tell you that having a baby is a joyous time. That there are few things in life that can compare to the elation that comes with having baby and becoming a mom… why then do you feel so down and depressed. The fact is that postpartum depression is more common than many want to admit. What’s more is that it is completely treatable, and you can treat it naturally so that you can enjoy being a mom to your new baby.

In order to fix a problem you must first admit that you have a problem. Unfortunately, postpartum depression (aka PPD) is not only not talked about; many mothers deny the fact that they have it. Look, you are not a bad mother because you feel the way you do. If you had baby almost a month ago and you are still feeling sad, blue and tired… you need to acknowledge the fact that you could have postpartum depression. That way you can do something about it, and despite what the professionals say you can do it on your own, and you can do it naturally.

There are number of natural treatments that you can do to help you get through your postpartum depression, once you admit that you have it. One treatment option is to talk to someone, this can be a therapists, it can be your best friend… or another mother. Often joining a new mom support group is helpful because then you know you are not alone. You need to know that you aren’t alone, as a matter a of fact some research shows that PPD affects 70% of new moms.

You can also try to include natural herbs in your daily diet that will help you boost your mood and energy. While there are many different natural herbs and supplements available here, I will list just a few. Please keep in mind that I am not offering medical advice and I encourage you to talk to your doctor before taking any herbal supplement especially if you are breast feeding to make sure that there are not any negative effects for baby.

Aurum metallicum can be used by women who feel that their PPD is dark and they feel helpless. Women that should look into this herbal supplement would be those that are starting to believe that baby would be better off without them, that the world would be better off without them.

Another remedy that is used by women when they feel that their depression is for emotional as well as hormonal reasons is cimicifuga. Ignatia is another that is used by many mothers when they are starting to feel upset, tense or grief-stricken after giving birth.

There are still other natural treatments for postpartum depression including mediation, yoga, and aromatherapy and music therapy. Ask yourself right now, if there was someone that would show you how to feel better so that you can be a better mom to your baby, would you listen to them? Postpartum depression is completely treatable, and you can treat it effectively naturally.

Treatments And Clinical Depression For The Elderly

Aging can bring with it all manner of issues including physical and mental health issues. Depression among the elderly typically coexists with another illness, disability or life changes. These life changes could be the death of someone close to them, retirement, and/or moving. Family and physicians could miss the signs of depression in the elderly simply because they are expected to become feebler, a bit sadder, and even slow down their lifestyle. They may lose interest in things and even stop eating.

Here are a few facts about Depression in the elderly. Depression will last longer in an elderly person. In nursing homes, it has been found that depression usually accompanies illness. Elderly people are more likely to die from that illness. They also are at greater risk for dying from a heart attack. Depression in the elderly is also likely to end in suicide.

Depression can be triggered by such things as Diabetes, Stroke, and Heart Disease.
Elderly people with Depression also have many higher insurances costs than those who are not depressed. It does not have to be like this for seniors; there are treatments available to them.

Psychotherapy is very helpful in helping the elderly to work out issues and reduce or get rid of depressive symptoms. It is often very beneficial for those who don’t want to take medications or those who refuse them.

Antidepressant medication for the elderly may take longer to become effective. There is always the concern that they may forget to take their medications. There is also the concern that they may refuse the medication altogether.

Electroconvulsive Therapy – ECT is known as shock treatments. An explanation of how the procedure is done, can be found below.

Before the procedure is actually done the patient is given both a general anesthetic and a muscle relaxant.

If it is performed correctly, a seizure will result. The muscle relaxant is designed to prevent this.

Electrodes are placed on the scalp and very controlled electric pulses are delivered through the electrodes. This cause brief seizure activity in the brain.

The patient’s muscles are relaxed so usually the result is slight hand and feet movements.

The patient wakes up within minutes but is often confused. They do not remember the procedure or events surrounding the procedure.

There are other brain stimulation procedures that can be done but it would be up to the treating physician whether they would be effective for an individual. Some can be invasive. It would greatly depend on the seriousness of the depression.

Since most prescribed medications often have some serious side effects, many people are searching out natural means to treat depression. Depression herbs are mixed in a specially formulated blend that is believed to affect moods. Although herbal treatments are natural, they do have some side, although not as serious or plentiful as with prescribed medications. Also, they could drop the efficacy of a prescription that one might be taking.

Herbal supplements should be made to pharmacy grade to ensure purity and that the ingredients that are said to be in the supplements actually are in it. The metabolic paths should have been tested at the molecular level for each particular ingredient if one wants to obtain the best possible therapeutic benefits. The interactions between the ingredients are also tested.

Treatments & Clinical Depression (for the) Elderly can be tricky because there is the possibility they may refuse or forget to take the medication. There is always the chance they will be fully cooperative with the protocol. Just because you (or someone you love) are aging, does not mean that they have to slow down, feel sad all the time, or change their lifestyles. Given the right care and treatment, they could live very productive lives for a long time.

An Epidemic of Depression

The plague of our times is a malady we call depression. In our society a tremendous percentage of the population will at some time experience depression. An industry has arisen around the treatment of depression and staggering numbers of pills are consumed to ward off the suffering imposed by this condition. We are quick to diagnose and seek treatments for depression. Yet, hardly anyone is asking, "Why is there an epidemic of depression?"

If we accept the traditional bio-medical approach, we would believe that our serotonin levels are responsible for this disease. Why then are our serotonin levels deviating from what they had been in the past? Rather than looking at our brain chemistry as the cause of this malaise, I would offer that we’re experiencing such alarming rates of depression because of the way that we’re living.

If you live a depressed life it will manifest in a host of ways, including your blood chemistry. The way that we live is lacking in meaning and purpose. Our lives are often visionless and passionless. We live in an intensely competitive culture that rewards achievement and success. Our identity and esteem become reflections of these external markers of achievement. When this occurs we honor the material acquisitions at the cost of devoting ourselves to intimate and loving relationships. Worst of all, in the desire to fit in and conform, we lose our inner voice. These conditions are indeed depressing.

People in loving relationships don’t typically feel depressed. Depression is symptomatic of feeling isolated and cut off. In our drive to live the good life, we typically isolate ourselves from relationships that might nourish us. Nurturing and loving relations has become somewhat marginalized and lost value in our very hurried lives. Our frenetic pace of life sees one day blur into another, until life begins to lose its meaning. We haven’t time to nurture our loved ones or ourselves and we lose our vision of a well-spent life. In fact, the problem is that we don’t know how to live well.

Labels such as dysfunctional are attached to people and families. People are not dysfunctional; social systems are. People suffer and experience pain. We are human beings, not machines that dysfunction. Such terminology expresses contempt for the human spirit. A society that produces such staggering rates of depression is dysfunctional. Our culture has created this epidemic.

Part of the problem is that we become corralled into a consensus of belief that does not serve our higher purpose. We are products of a cultural belief system that ignores or devalues matters of the heart and then turns and points its accusatory finger at those who suffer. When we do so we victimize the victim. If we began to look at the depression as symptomatic of living depressing lives, we’d begin to understand that the cure lies in addressing what our souls are longing for. When we suppress the voice of our soul, depression arises. Depression surfaces for a reason. It is crying out for our attention. The epidemic of depression is simply indicative of lives lived without joy.

People who feel passion for their work and friends and love their families and partners don’t become depressed as often as the population at large. People who are in touch with their spirit and enjoy a sense of community don’t become depressed. People who maintain a sense of wonder and awe don’t become depressed. People who live their truth don’t incline toward depression. Depression isn’t the enemy. It’s simply a warning sign that we’re not on the right path.

Before the advent of modern psychotherapy and well before the pathologizing of the word "depression" we would refer to such symptoms as melancholia. Life would bring certain periods and events in which one might feel some melancholy. Sadness is appropriate at times. When people experienced such sadness, friends and family may have supported them through the difficult times. But they weren’t told that there was something wrong with them. Loving support is the most powerful agent in the treatment of depression. When we lose our compassion and relegate depressed people to the status of patients, we tend to dehumanize them. A dominant theme in our society is that you should be happy and if you’re not, there’s something wrong with you. Life can be difficult at time. It is in the labeling of people as depressed, that the greatest injustice is done.

If we see depression as a signal that something is off, we might use the depression to catalyze positive change. Very often depression makes perfect sense. In my practice, I often treat individuals who are being abused or living in loveless relationships. Depression in such instances seems quite appropriate. Rather than treat the depression, I prefer to assist these people in creating healthier lives. It is essential to treat the person, not the depression. In some instances, depression is situational. Loss of a loved one, illness or job loss creates circumstances which are painful. Working through the loss is more healing than medicating the pain. It is essential to address the underlying causes and not simply suppress the symptoms. The difficulty is that in our quick fix mentality, we believe that if we can suppress the symptoms that all is well. When we come to see depression not as the enemy but as an expression of some inner struggle, the epidemic will likely subside as we come to honor the integrity of our human spirit.

I believe the single most important reason for the epidemic of depression in our society is the damage to our bodies’ natural daily rhythms that’s done by artificial light, indoor life, and sleep deprivation…

10 Simple Coping Strategies When a Family Member Has Clinical …

1.Remember that it is an illness:

Clinical depression often requires medical supervision as well as professional treatment. Clinical depression is treatable and requires commitment, understanding and patience from all those involved.

2.It is not your fault:

Clinical depression is usually a combination of chemical imbalance and learned behaviors. There may be times when the depressed individual is extremely sensitive, argumentative and/or blaming towards you, the children, the in-laws, the boss and even the world. All the above mentioned are not the cause. What you are responsible for is how you choose to take on the outward symptoms and how they affect you, your home and your relationships.

3.Be well informed:

Educate yourself on what type of depression is present and if there is a dual diagnosis
IE: chemical dependency and depression or personality disorders and depression. Know what the symptoms, treatments and follow-ups are. There are suggested guidelines for communication and setting boundaries. Though the illness is not your fault; it benefits you and your family to remain open minded and willing to learn new ways of doing things.

4.Make sure to have a support network:

Depression and dual diagnosis affects the whole family. There are many ranges of emotions from anger and fear to hopefulness and hopelessness. Having others that have experienced it before can help eliminate unhealthy coping mechanisms such as isolation, shame, control and low self-esteem. There are many national and local support groups available on line. For more information check with your favorite search engines or call a local and/or national mental health hotline.

5.Make time for yourself and your children:

Don’t fall into the trap of not taking care of yourselves. Misery and fear love company. Living with and loving someone who is clinically depressed can be incredibly draining. Do not become a hostage or enabler. Remember your flight instructions: "For those traveling with small children; place the oxygen mask on yourself first and then assist the children."

6.Be a victor not a victim:

Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional:
We are all going to feel pain in life never mind a home with mental illness. Surround yourselves with knowledge, self-care, experienced support and nurturing. There are no such things as victims only volunteers.

7.Recognize that clinical depression is episodic
Clinical depression comes in waves. People with clinical depression do get better!

8.Understand that medication takes time to work:

In most cases, improvement takes as long as 6-8 weeks. Even early responders require about 3-4 weeks before they notice mood improvement. Even after a person with clinical depression feels better, she or he needs to stay on medication at least six months. People should never stop taking medication on their own; medical supervision is a must. There can be serious physical and emotional complications from sudden withdrawal such as increased depression and suicidal tendencies.

9.Medication alone is fairly ineffective:

Research shows that medication in combination with cognitive behavioral therapy is more effective than medication alone. Combined with therapy, the person who is clinically depressed may need to make lifestyle changes, including dietary and exercise changes. The family needs to find ways to reduce stressors by simplifying their lives.

10.Get a written relapse prevention plan:

Make a list of early symptoms such as sleep, appetite and mood changes. Early intervention is the key to stopping a downward spiral. Determine what worked in the past to get the person with clinical depression back on track and do the things that worked before.

Understanding Symptoms of Manic Depression In Children

Until recently, Bipolar disorder, a serious, nevertheless treatable mental illness was rarely diagnosis in young children. The symptoms of this mental illness included extreme changes in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior. Today, doctors can recognize this illness and treat them accordingly in young children.

Also known as manic depression, bipolar disorder symptoms can appear as early as infancy stage. The signs and symptoms include an erratic sleep patterns and much difficulty settling a baby who is diagnosed later in life as having bipolar disorder. Separation anxiety or extreme tantrums and rages may have had happened in the toddler’s life.

While children with bipolar disorder do not experience the same syndromes that most adults do, children with bipolar disorder still display signs and traits like changes in mood and behavior that is known to be symptoms of the disorder. Children suffering from moods swings are known as episodes and there are generally two types of episodes. Episodes of extreme elation or agitation followed by high energy are known as mania. Persistent states of extreme sadness or irritability followed by low energy are known as depression.

Unlike most adults, manic depression may seem to be different in children. Children more often suffer from an ongoing mood disturbance that is a mix of mania and depression. This rapid and severe cycling between moods produces chronic irritability and few clear periods of wellness between episodes. Rapid cycling is common among children with bipolar disorder and they may well experience several episodes of mania and depression within a single day. They may also experience mixed cycling where the symptoms of both mania and depression occur simultaneously.

It is also common to find other mental disorders to be diagnosed in bipolar children. These other diagnoses may be in addition to the bipolar disorder, or they may be an incorrect diagnosis of symptoms of bipolar disorder. Some of the commonly found mental disorders are Depression, ADHD (Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder), ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), schizophrenia, and Tourette syndrome.

Today, it is suspected that numerous children diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD) actually have bipolar disorder instead of ADHD. Misdiagnosis on the doctors’ part can lead to giving the wrong medication. This can be a serious mistake as it could easily trigger mania or suicidal thoughts within the children.

For some teenagers, it is found that a dearly loss or other traumatic event could trigger a first episode of depression or mania. In later stages, episodes can happen without any obvious stresses, or could even worsen if stress comes along into their life. Puberty is also a time of risk. In girls, the beginning of menstruation may trigger the illness, and symptoms often vary in severity with the monthly cycle.

Early intervention and treatment is the best bet to help young children recover from bipolar disorder. It is also the best chance for them to achieve stability and grow up to enjoy their life thereafter. Effective treatment should be soughed out as fast as possible to control the symptoms and to diminish the negative effects of the illness on their young lives and those who love them so dearly.

Treating Depression Naturally – The Best Way to Fight It

Therapy and prescription medication are crucial tools in helping individuals cope with clinical depression, and both have a proven track record of success over a considerable number of years. Recently, however, it has been found that there are natural ways to augment these traditional treatments. "Lifestyle changes are a very important part of treatment," says Ian A. Cook, MD, director of UCLA’s Depression Research Program.

Routine is the First Step
Focusing upon a regular routine is very beneficial for depression sufferers. Depression can destroy the basic structure of daily life, causing one day to blend indistinguishably into the next. This absence of structure can also worsen symptoms of depression. Creating a carefully planned routine can help combat many aspects of debilitating depression safely and naturally.

The best ways to develop a sensible routine are to concentrate on lifestyle changes that can improve one’s overall health, not just ease or address the depression. These include eating a balanced diet, setting a pattern for sleeping and waking times, establishing simple, attainable goals each day, finding some type of responsibility, whether it means returning to work part-time or volunteering, and making time to relax at some point each day.

Exercise has Amazing Benefits
Numerous studies have confirmed that regular physical activity can improve mood. Even just 20 minutes of moderate exercise each day is sufficient to have a significant impact upon attitude. The type of exercise does not seem to matter. Walking, jogging, swimming, or riding a bicycle are equally effective options, and which is chosen is purely a matter of personal preference. The reasons for the connection between physical exertion and mood are not clear, but there are several theories based upon recent research which have been presented. These include:

* Exercise releases endorphins, the chemicals in the brain that improve mood, which can alleviate depression symptoms.
* Physical activity reduces the impact of certain chemicals in the immune system that have been known to exacerbate depression.
* Working out raises body temperature, which can create a feeling of calm and peacefulness.

While there have been a large number of studies on the physical benefits of regular exercises, the psychological benefits of regular exercise are well documented as well. Some of these benefits include:

* Setting and meeting exercise goals helps improve confidence and self-esteem. The physical results of regular exercise – weight loss, better muscle tone, and improved appearance – can also help engender self-confidence and an increased feeling of self worth.
* Exercise is a distraction that can provide an escape from the damaging cycle of negativity associated with depression and anxiety disorders. Regular exercise allows an individual to remove their focus from their problems, and concentrate instead on accomplishing the task presented by the exercise routine.
* Many individuals who engage in regular exercise do so in a public place like a health club or a public park. This makes it easier to socialize and meet new people. Even smiling or waving at a neighbor as they pass on the sidewalk can help boost one’s mood.
* Taking positive steps to manage depression is an effective coping mechanism. Many individuals who suffer with depression self-medicate with alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription medication, or other harmful substances and behaviors. Exercising is a way to replace those dangerous practices with something much more uplifting and much more effective.

Other Ways to Fight Depression Naturally
Exercise is not the only way to ward off depression and anxiety naturally. Part of the work also involves changing thought patterns. "When you’re depressed, you become trained to see the world and yourself in a negative way," says Dean MacKinnon, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University Hospital. These negative thoughts can last for months or even years after the physical symptoms of depression have passed.

Automatic thoughts are linked to the subconscious and can be hard to control. The secret is finding ways to manage and change them without allowing oneself to be pulled under the misery once again. Some of the best ways to do this include:

* Reflect on when and where negative feelings most often creep up. It can be difficult to catch the self indulging in automatic thought patterns. Reconstructing the past can help, as can analyzing potential triggers. Eventually, these thoughts can be stopped before they have a chance to impact one’s state of mind.
* Clear thoughts of negativity when automatic thinking is suspected. Practice breathing exercises or take a short walk. This mental break can be crucial.
* Be logical and try to gain some perspective on the situation. Do not exaggerate negative circumstances; simply try to apply reason and inject a bit of reality.
* Reach out to others for support. Friends, family, support groups, or a licensed therapist can all help share the burden of depression or can simply provide a safe outlet for any other issue that warrants discussion.
* Many natural extracts and nutritional supplements have been promised to reduce depression symptoms, but these supplements can interact negatively with prescription medications. Always check with a physician or treating therapist before beginning a supplement therapy.
* Shake up the routine once in a while by striking out to try something new. Take a class, visit the library, go to a museum, volunteer, or just get out of the house for a few hours and do something out of the ordinary. This creates a sense of excitement that can combat depression symptoms.
* Make time for things that are enjoyable. Depression does not mean one must stop laughing, having fun, or embracing humor. Allow laughter to slowly return and welcome happiness when it comes along. Even when having a good time feels like a chore, it is important to persevere.

The Bottom Line
Depression can only be cured by a combination of treatments, but a more natural approach can lessen dependence on prescription medications and therapy, thereby speeding healing. Using these natural methods to augment traditional treatments is a wonderful way to take an active part in recovery.

Depression Statistics – The Numbers That Matter and the Best …

We are going to look at just how common the depression disorder is in the country of America. Depression is something that is experienced all over the world of course, not only in America, but just to get an idea of some kind of depression statistics we will use America as an example. These statistics will be that of adults only, eighteen years and older, that are suffering or have suffered from depression. There are different types of depression and some cases are milder than others, but that will all depend on the individual and the reason for their depression as well as the treatment and precautions they took.

In any year, 6.6% of men and 12% of women will have had any type of depression; where as over an entire lifetime, approximately 10% of men and 20% of women will have had or will get clinical depression. Also in any year, 3.3% of men and 6.5% of women will have serious depression. One percent of both men and women will suffer from bipolar disorder in their lifetime, and this disorder is a big factor when it comes to the possibility of depression. Those with bipolar often become depressed as they find it difficult to accept their condition and don’t like to live with it.

Another disorder that tends to trigger depression is Dysthymia – which is a chronic condition that is distinguished by certain depressive symptoms, and these symptoms are ones that disrupt a patient’s entire life. In one’s lifetime, at least 5.4% will suffer from Dysthymia, and a percentage of about 2% will develop depression on top of this disorder.

Other statistics prove that the average age when depression is likely to occur is in the mid-twenties, Bipolar Disorder in the early twenties, and Dysthymia can occur in early adulthood, childhood or adolescents.

Anxiety disorders are also commonly associated with depression. Many people that suffer from anxiety have the same problem with depression as they are more susceptible to getting other disorders when they already have one. This is the reason why it is important for anyone with depression to have it treated immediately. By having it treated you don’t always have to go for the chemical medication first. There are many natural ways in which you can kick your depression. You don’t have to suffer your entire life, and especially if you are still young. If you don’t get it seen to it will only get worse.

By making use of natural medication you will not have to live with any dangerous side effects, nor will you be dependant on them like you would with drugs like anti depressants. You will be able to sleep at night without them eventually, and they are nowhere near as harsh as anti depressants are. You also have different options when you are looking at natural treatments for your depression. They are all safe and effective so there is no need to worry about that. Natural medication along with some good old exercise and you will feel more like yourself everyday.

Economic Depression – Do You Know What Caused the Great Depression?

Care for some snippets of history? Do you know the history of The Great Depression? I’m sure one time or another you’ve heard of it. The worst economic depression in the history of the United States of America is by far the aptly named The Great Depression. Nevertheless, numerous people in this day and age still have no inkling what’s the real cause or reason behind this terrible economic depression. And according to some historians and expert economists, there are top 5 reasons or causes for the occurrence of the Great Depression. As a matter of fact, there were many causes of this economic slump that were both local and international in nature.

In other words, it affected and impacted not only America but also the whole world. This phenomenon was actually the direct cause for the ascent of extremism in Germany, which conclusively gave rise to World War II. So here now are the Top 5 Reasons/Causes of The Great Depression.

1. The stock market crash in 1929 – most people thought that the crash in stock market which took place on October 29, 1929 was similar to the Great Depression. Nonetheless, that was one of the chief causes of the economic depression, and 2 months after that fateful downfall, it’s approximated that several stockholders lost more than $40 billion.

Though the stock market recovered some of its losses at the end of 1930, the gain wasn’t adequate to avert the economic depression.

2. Purchase declines – fears were further elevated with the stock market crash and economic difficulties and troubles were surrounding the people so they just stopped spending their cash and buying things. Eventually this paved the way to a decrease in production, that in turn led to dismissal of employees. The whole occurrence just turned out to be a savage chain of events since as the workforce is already lessened, people didn’t have sufficient funds and banks and various financial institutions were not extending their credit.

3. Bank closures – all bank deposits during 1930 were not insured at that time and the depositors turned out losing their whole life’s savings and hard earned money. It was during this time that more than 9,000 banks and financial institutions flopped and eventually closed shops. But there are also banks which endured decline and closure, yet they just played it safe and they ceased providing credit and this resulted to many failing and weakening businesses thus, people don’t have sufficient funds to spend.

4. The drought in the Mississippi Valley in 1930 – this truly generated a terrible desolation among the farming industry and community although not a direct cause of the Great Depression itself.

Most farmers together with their families were not able to look for jobs to provide for their family and themselves so they have to live on charity.

5. The U.S. policy with Europe – as more and more businesses and enterprises in America begin to decline, The U.S. began charging a high tax on imports just to protect those American companies and businesses. Consequently, the result is less trade in the European nations and the U.S. alongside with economic payback gambits.

The pink pages of Rose’s journal take readers on a journey to see for themselves just what life was like from month to month on the farm. It also includes information about what was happening across the nation back then. Historical black and white photographs make this journal seem more real and help to give kids a glimpse of just how bleak life was for a girl like Rose.

Children’s Book Review – Rose’s Journal, The Story of a Girl in …

This book lets kids travel back in time to the 1930s with a young girl named Rose who lives on a farm in Kansas during the Great Depression.

Rose’s Journal is an enjoyable way for young readers to learn about one of the most fascinating periods in American history – when Amelia Earhart made her solo flight from Hawaii to California, yet times were so tough for most Americans that they lived by this motto for making do with what little they had: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

The journal is printed on lines which look like notebook paper, as if each page were handwritten by Rose. It includes drawings of important things in Rose’s life, like her puppy, the radio (which was a big part of everyone’s life back then), and her family, etc. Kids and adults alike will find this to be an entertaining read that leaves them with a good idea of just difficult the Great Depression, dust storms, and droughts must have been for someone like young Rose.
